Three people have thrown their hats in the ring for the Florala District 5 council seat.

Mayor Robert Williamson said that list includes former Councilwoman Sue Mathis, Ann Eason and Joe Wright.

The seat became vacant when Councilwoman Gloria Cassady, who ran unopposed in the Aug. 28 municipal election, relinquished the seat before being sworn into office.

Williamson said since state law required all municipal officers to be sworn in by midnight on Nov. 5 and no one was, that position was open.

Interested applicants had until Monday to contact city hall. Now, council members will have one week to obtain public input on the candidates.

The new councilperson will be announced on Dec. 17, he said.

Meetings are held at city hall on Wall Street at 6:30 p.m.
