A 92-year-old man is dead, and three homes are likely total losses as the result of separate house fires Thursday night.
State Fire Marshal Ed Paulk confirmed that Willie James Weeden, 92, of 915 Whatley St., died in his home Thursday night.
Paulk said the preliminary investigation shows that the most probable cause of the fatal fire was a wood-burning heater.
“We also saw some electrical wiring that was a potential ignition cause,” Paulk said. “We didn’t see anything that looked suspicious that would lead us to believe the fire was intentional.”
Andalusia Fire Department Capt. Russell McGlamory said the Weeden home was fully engulfed when firefighters responded around 10 p.m. They spent several hours extinguishing the fire.
Additionally, firefighters were called to 1108 Stanley Ave. around 11:30 p.m., to a home that was also engulfed, McGlamory said.
“No one was injured in that fire,” he said. “We did receive mutual aid from Carolina and River Falls Fire Departments.”
Around 3:30 a.m. Friday, Loango and River Falls Fire Departments, along with EMS and the Covington County Sheriff’s deputies responded to 21490 Loango Road to a fully-engulfed home.
