The Red Level Tigers beat the Panthers of Georgiana Saturday afternoon to clinch the third place trophy of their annual Christmas tournament.
The Tigers took the lead early in the second quarter and never relinquished it, winning by a final score of 56-38.
K.J. Lawrence continued his spectacular tournament play, hitting a three-pointer with just under six minutes remaining in the second quarter to extend Red Level’s lead to 14-10.
A few minutes later, Tim Sims took a hard foul and made both shots to cap an impressive 8-0 run for his Tigers.
Georgiana’s Tarien Crittenden answered with a three-ball to end Red Level’s run, but the Tigers still took a sizeable lead into the half, 24-17.
Both teams traded baskets to start the second half before Spencer Stallworth of Red Level made a shot while being fouled.
After he completed the three-point play, the home team’s lead was pushed to 10 and the Tigers began to go on another roll.
More successful foul shots by Sims, Lawrence and Stallworth, followed by a Lawrence’s fast break lay-up gave Red Level a 13-point lead, and the Tigers were showing no signs of slowing down.
Sims scored eight consecutive points in the paint to effectively put the game out of reach for the Panthers and when the final buzzer sounded the scoreboard read 56-38 in favor of Red Level.
Lawrence led all scorers with 19 points on 5-9 shooting and Sims chipped in 13 of his own on a very efficient 5-6 from the field.
The Lady Tigers of Red Level weren’t quite as fortunate on Saturday, falling to Luverne 55-28.
Red Level jumped out to a 13-0 lead early in the game, but couldn’t hold on to it down the stretch, being outscored in the second half 34-12.
