Locals will have the opportunity to take a victory lap around the town square in Florala to celebrate the legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday.

Bishop Nathaniel Belcher said the day’s festivities will start at 11 a.m. at the Carver Community Center in Florala.

“We’re going to say a prayer, a pledge and remember the deceased and have words of encouragement,” Belcher said.

Belcher said Dr. King’s Victory March is held each year to remember and celebrate King’s legacy.

“It’s just to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King and to let him know the effort he started and to keep the dream alive,” he said.

Marchers will walk around the square one time, Belcher said.

“Those who can’t walk, can ride,” he said. “We will have a motorcade.”

Additionally, Belcher said there will be refreshments available after the festivities and perhaps games to be played.

Also, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “dream,” Opp residents will come together today for their annual march.

The citywide march, coined as “honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the spirit of Opp,” will begin at 10:15 a.m. at the Opp Police Department.

Bethel AME Church will also hold a Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., at 3 p.m., Sun., Jan. 20.

St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church will hold an event at 6 p.m. on Mon., Jan. 21.
