Andalusia routs Hillcrest

Andalusia’s Daniel Henderson threw a no-hitter Thursday night to help lead the Bulldogs to a 15-2 area victory over Hillcrest-Evergreen.
Henderson walked two and struck out five batters in four innings of work.
Hillcrest-Evergreen’s two runs came in the second inning on back-to-back errors by the Bulldogs.
Andalusia right fielder Will Harrison had a good night behind the plate with a 3-for-4 performance to lead the Bulldogs.
Devan McDuffie went 2-for-4; and Brandon Smith went 1-for-3 with a double. Hunter Earnest and Jud Rogers went 1-for-2 each.
AHS senior Zach Ward was hit by a pitch two times, but reached the bases on a perfect 4-for-4 night.
The Bulldogs scored two runs in the first inning, and added one run in the top of the second to take a 3-0 lead.
After the Jaguars cut the game to 3-2 in the bottom of the second, Andalusia opened the flood gates with eight runs in the third and four runs in the fourth to force the mercy rule after five innings.
Relief pitcher Evans Barnes came in and pitched the fifth. He struck out two to get the save.
With this victory, the Bulldogs improve to 9-2 overall, and 1-0 in Class 4A, Area 2.
In junior varsity action, the Bulldogs fell to rival Opp 15-3.
Andalusia will start a long stretch of six games in four days today, starting withe the area series completion against the Jaguars today at home.
Bulldogs coach Jonathan Rasberry said the approaches to the plate were decent in the game against HHS.
“We hit the ball real well,” he said. “We ran the bases well.”
Additionally, the Andalusia coach gave kudos to his pitching staff’s showing.
In order to win ball games, Andalusia will have to continue to play better defense, Rasberry said.
