A local man was given 12 years in prison Wednesday after pleading guilty to manufacturing a controlled substance.

Ricky Joe Burgans narrowly avoided going to trial, which was scheduled before Circuit Judge Lex Short. A jury was stuck; however, Burgans elected to plea, instead.

“This is just one more example of how the jury system works,” said District Attorney Walt Merrell. “Some folks have to have their feet in the fire before they’re willing to own up to what they’ve done. This case is a good example of that.”

Burgans has applied for probation. A hearing is set for May 16.

As a condition of the plea agreement, the State will stand opposed to Burgans being placed on probation, Merrell said.
