A “medical episode” Tuesday morning ended with the death of the driver and damage to a pillar at the Opp location of CCB Community Bank.

Opp Police Chief Mike McDonald said he was unable to give the driver’s name due to notification of next of kin, but did say that the driver left the road way around 7:30 a.m., drove through the Chevron parking lot, drove across another road and into the CCB parking lot, where his vehicle struck a brick pillar.

“There was damage to the pillar,” McDonald said. “He was transported to Mizell Memorial Hospital where he expired at 8:16 a.m.”

McDonald said he feels confident the death was caused from the medical episode.
