C amp Sonshine has added several new programs to its list, and is continuing with its summer program that started it all some four years ago.

Director Nancy Philyaw said Monday that so far approximately 100 children have signed up for the summer’s day camp, held at Southside Baptist Church in Andalusia.

“We are just a ministry,” Philyaw said. “We’re not a business, but we’re here to serve the children.”

Philyaw said the program has grown in size and in the number of full-time employees needed.

“We have 13 people full time and part time,” she said. “We went from two full-time to six full-time.”

Philyaw said Camp Sonshine now boasts four programs: after school-holiday care, Wee-Care preschool for ages 3 and 4, Wee-Care infants for ages 6 weeks to 3 years, and the Camp Sonshine day camp program.

“We have 125 children in the afternoon from babies to toddler to school children,” she said.

The summer program is for 4-year-olds through middle schoolers.

Activities include Bible, character-building and missions classes, arts and crafts and recreation.

And campers said it’s a fun place for kids to be.

“We get to go outside, play basketball, watch movies, and just enjoy the summer,” said Alana Wheeler, who has previously attended the summer program.

Weekly cost is $75 for one child; $120 for two children and $150 a week for three children.

The summer program will begin May 28, and will run from 7 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., daily.
