Straughn’s Tigers are looking to turn things around today in the second round of the Class 3A State Golf Tournament in Muscle Shoals.
The Tigers shot a 328 and are in fourth place at the state championship.
Brooks Rabren, who is in third place as an individual, shot an even-par 72 on Monday in the first round. He had four birdies and four bogeys.
SHS golf coach Mike Kelly, who couldn’t make the trip with the team because of a business conflict he couldn’t get out of, said he’s not “dissatisfied” with the team’s first round.
“I look for them to make a move (today),” Kelly said. “We’re not out of it by no means.”
Keegan Compton shot a 10-over-par 82, with six bogeys, three birdies and three double or more bogeys. Compton is 20th as an individual.
Bryan Barnes added a 14-over-par 86; Matt Canant shot a 16-over-par 88; and Austin Noland shot an 18-over-par 90.
SHS coach Scott Kinsaul traveled with the team to the championship, and said the players didn’t get off to a good start.
“Our boys shot higher scores than they normally shoot,” Kinsaul said. “We just had a bad front nine. Maybe we’ll turn it around (today) and play better.”
Bayside Academy is in first place with an opening round of 304.
Noland will get his second round going today at 7 a.m. Barnes, Compton and Canant follow with the next three groups at 7:09, 7:18 and 7:27 a.m., respectively; and Rabren starts at 7:36 a.m.
