The Town of Heath will begin collecting sales, privilege, license or excise taxes beginning July 1.

The town will levy a 2 percent sales tax, making a total of 8 percent for purchases in Heath.

The council approved these new taxes at the March 12 council meeting.

RDS of Birmingham will collect the taxes and fees, according to the resolution.

The town’s first collection should be received on or before Aug. 20.

Businesses in Heath include American Auction House, Andalusia Garden Center, Cenergy Oil and Gas, Clark Trailer and others.

Additionally, the town will now require service providers and utility companies to pay privilege taxes. Excise taxes will now be levied on things such as gasoline purchases.

And business license fees will also be charged.
