This weekend’s severe weather is being blamed for at least one traffic accident and a catastrophic house fire in Andalusia.

Thunderstorms and lightning made its way through the area shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday, dropping nearly two inches of rain in less than four hours.

Power outages were reported in Opp and the Horn Hill Community, while just before 6 p.m., two people suffered minor injuries when their Ford SUV apparently hydroplaned.

Reports indicate that the Jaws of Life was used to pull free the entrapped occupants.

However, things did not end as well for Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Phillips, whose Brookwood subdivision home caught fire at approximately 6 p.m. Sunday.

When emergency personnel from the Carolina and Libertyville volunteer fire departments arrived, the couple’s two-story brick home was fully engulfed in flames, and on Monday, was still smoldering.

Officials are crediting the afternoon’s severe lightning with starting the blaze.

No one was at home during the fire; however, officials deemed the home a complete loss.
