Andy falls in 8U, 12U softball title games

Andalusia’s 8U and 12U Babe Ruth Softball All-Stars fell in their respective championship games today in state tournament action at the Dwight Mikel Athletic Complex.

Opp beat Andalusia 7-3 to claim the 8U tile, while Tri County demolished the Lady Bulldogs 14-2 in the 12U age group.

The Lady Bobcats beat Covington County 27-5 to earn a berth into the 8U championship. Andalusia beat Brewton twice (14-6 and 17-7) in pool play to reach the championship.

In 12U action, Andalusia beat Covington County 9-3 in bracket play.

Games from each age group with the final games of pool play and bracket action are below.

Play was stopped at around 7:15 p.m. because of lightning.

The tournament will resume at 8 a.m. tomorrow, where Opp is leading Wedowee 9-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning in 10U action. The winner faces Covington County next.

8U

Opp 7, Andalusia 3

Opp went ahead 4-2 after the second inning and tacked on three runs in the fifth inning.

Cardwell went 3-for-3 with a home run to lead the Lady Bobcats.

Opp 27, Covington County 5

Opp scored 13 runs in the sixth inning after taking a 14-5 lead after the fifth for the rout.

Gilbreath went 3-for-6 with two doubles; and Cardwell went 4-for-6 to lead the Lady Bobcats.

Elizabeth Cross went 3-for-3 with three singles; Lexie Cook and Rene Lewis went 2-for-3 each to lead Covington County.

Andalusia 17, Brewton 7

Olivia Mikel went 2-for-4; Maggie Furr went 2-for-2; C. Pettie went 2-for-3; K. Murphy went 1-for-3; and M. Davis and M. Mitchell had to runs each to lead Andalusia.

Brewton’s Peyton Myrick went 2-for-3.

Covington County 7, Opp 6

Covington County trailed 5-0 going into the fifth, and scored seven runs in the final two innings in the win.

Kadin Watson, Lewis, Emma McDaniel and Courtney Griggs went 1-for-3 each to lead CC.

Gilbreath, Rhodes and Cardwell hit one single each to lead the Lady Bobcats.

Andalusia 14, Brewton 6

Furr, Pettie and Murphy went 2-for-4 each to lead Andalusia. M. Davis went 1-for-2 with a double. Mikel went 1-for-4 with a double.

Brewton’s Kinsley Byrd went 1-for-4 with a double; and Myrick went 1-for-4 with a single.

10U

Opp 6, Covington County 5

The Lady Bobcats led 4-0 after the third inning and held on late despite a CC rally in the fifth and sixth innings.

Sara Richburg went 2-for-3 to lead Opp.

Sydney Arnett went 1-for-2 to lead CC.

Wedowee 18, Brewton 2

Brewton’s Makenzie went 1-for-1 with a double; and Sailor went 1-for-2 with a double.

Wedowee scored six runs in the first inning, two runs in the third and six in the fourth.

East Brewton 14, Tri County 13

The game was neck and neck the first two innings, but East Brewton started to chip away in the third with six runs to take a 10-8 lead.

East Brewton added four runs in the fifth, and despite Tri County scoring five runs in the sixth, still got the win.

Asia Davis went 2-for-4 with a double to lead East Brewton.

Andalusia 14, Alex City 13

Late Friday night after the rain delay, Andalusia won its right to become the top seed out of pool play with the one-run win over Alex City.

Andalusia scored two runs each in the first and second innings, five runs in the third, three runs in the fourth and one run each in the fifth and sixth.

Maggie Furr went 1-for-3 with a single to lead Andalusia.

12U

Tri County 14, Andalusia 2

Tri County bolted out to a 10-0 lead in the first inning, added one run in the second and tacked on three more in the third for the championship win.

Madison Long and Val Tomberlin went 1-for-1 each with a single to lead Andalusia.

Covington County 16, Flomaton/East Brewton 1

Covington County’s Morgan Bledsoe and Allie Hawkins went 2-for-3 each to lead the host team. Tori Hall went 2-for-2; Amy Bulger went 1-for-1; and Madison Harrison went 1-for-2.

CC scored five runs in the first inning, one run each in the second and third, and nine in the fourth.

Flomaton/East Brewton was held to no hits in the game.

Tri County 25, Opp 14

Tri County’s Alyssa B. went 3-for-3 as her team scored five runs in the first inning, four runs in the second, three runs in the third, 10 runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth.

Opp scored two runs in the first and cut the lead to 9-7 with five runs in the second inning. The Bobcats went on to score two runs in the third, four runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth.

Opp’s Magie Short, Gracie Kidd and Cassadie Adams went 1-for-3 each; and Trinity Teague went 1-for-2.

To gain a berth into the championship game, Tri County beat PCI 2-1 in bracket play.

Andalusia 9, Covington County 3

Bella Worley went 3-for-3 to lead Covington County.

Tessa Walker and Long went 2-for-3 each to lead Andalusia.
