County 11-12s score 3 runs in 5th, edge Andalusia

Covington County scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to edge Andalusia 4-3 in bracket play tonight at the 11-to-12-year-old Cal Ripken State Baseball Tournament at Johnson Park.

CC scored two of its three runs with two outs. Andalusia had a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning.

Mitch Schultz, who earned his second win on the mound for the day, scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 3-all. Then, Justin Peeples hit the eventual game-winning RBI single to essentially put all hope away for the Bulldogs.

Andalusia couldn’t get anything going in the bottom of the sixth, as all three batters went down looking.

Schultz, who went 2-for-3, pitched two innings and struck out four batters. Cade Courson also led CC, going 2-for-3.

Andalusia’s Sebaskin Stallworth and Jake Barefoot scored in the first inning as the Bulldogs took an early 2-0 lead. Stallworth and Barefoot scored on Thomas Phillips’ triple.

The Bulldogs took their 3-1 lead on Barefoot’s RBI single in the top of the fifth.

Covington County will face Opp at noon tomorrow in the semifinals.

In other 11-12 action, CC and Semmes represented the third contest to go into extra innings today.

The game was tied 8-8 at the end of regulation, thanks to a solo home run late by Courson. Behind the much-needed momentum, CC scored four runs in the top of the eighth to pull away.

Semmes made things interesting by tacking on two runs with two out, but couldn’t push anymore across.

Schultz struck out five batters and allowed two runs in two innings to earn the win for Covington County on the mound.

Hogan Nichols went 3-for-4 with two doubles to lead CC. Tyler Ward went 2-for-5; Trystian Barber went 3-for-5 with a double; Courson went 2-for-5 with a home run and a double; and Chance Russell went 4-for-5 with two doubles.

Andalusia fell to Opp 5-1 in the final game of pool play earlier this afternoon.

Opp’s Tyler Schively and Ethan Baker hit an RBI each in the first inning to give the Bobcats an early 2-0 lead.

The Bulldogs cut the game to 2-1 in the third inning, but Opp tacked on three runs in the top of the sixth to pull away for the win.

Trey Moody went 1-for-3 with a double for the Bobcats, and Logan Ross went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Stallworth went 2-for-3 with a triple to lead the Bulldogs.

Demopolis 8, Semmes 0

Henry Overmeyer went 3-for-3 with two doubles, and Wesley Allgood went 1-for-2 with a double to lead Demopolis.

Hunter Thrash struck out eight batters and allowed no runs in three innings for the win.

Dempolis advances to play Butler at 10 a.m. tomorrow on the other side’s semifinals.

11-year-old Cal Ripken Tournament

Covington County lost its third game of pool play this morning in a 10-0 decision to Valley Grande.

VG scored one run in the first inning, seven runs in the second and two runs in the third.

CC will play next at 6 tonight.

Covington County was eliminated by Childersburg, 13-4, in its second game of the day.

CC kept it close the first two innings, but Childersburg loaded the bases and started hitting to score six runs in the third to make it a no contest.

Colby Copeland went 1-for-4; Dale Coleman went 2-for-3; and Chandler Mitchell went 1-for-2 with a double.
