Councilmen vie for board seat

Things got a bit frosty at the Opp city council meeting Monday when it came to appoint someone to the city’s utility board.

The seat became vacant following the resignation of Ernie DePrinzio, who cited a lack of time because of increasing business responsibilities.

Mayor John Bartholomew made a motion to appoint councilman Arlin Davis to the board.

“I promised (Davis) the seat during the election,” Bartholomew said, but then he clarified himself, stating, “He asked me first, and I said I’d consider it. I thought he’d make a good appointment because he’d served on the council before.”

Councilman T.D. Morgan spoke out against the appointment.

“I thought I was next on the list,” Morgan said.

When Bartholomew asked for a second on the motion, he was met with silence.

He said the matter will be discussed again at the city’s July 15 meeting.
