After being out of jail for one full day, a Florala man stands accused of trying to rape a female friend during the city’s annual Masonic Celebration week.

Sgt. Paul Adams of the Florala Police Department said the incident occurred around midnight on Tues., June 25, between Ronnie James Bettis and an adult female at the Sixth Avenue apartments.

“After investigating this case for several days, and obtaining witnesses statements, we determined that basically, Mr. Bettis had been drinking, took his clothes off and told the victim, “I’m going to get some,” and threw her to floor, pulled her clothes off and tried to rape her,” Adams said. “She was able to kick him off, run into a room, lock the door and call 911.”

Adams said Bettis has been out of jail for one day after he bonded out on three grand jury indictments for distribution.

“And due to the quick response time of officers John Hudson and Patrick McCollough, a bad situation didn’t turn into a worse one,” Adams said.

Bettis turned himself in to authorities Friday afternoon and is being held without bond on five counts of bond revocation and one count of attempted rape I. At his 72-hour hearing Monday, Bettis’ revocation case was continued until the end of the month.
