Covington County’s 10-and-under Babe Ruth All-Stars made the long trek to Glen Allen, Va., for the 2013 Southeast Region Softball Tournament, which begins today.

CC will be playing in pool play today and Friday before the tournament transitions to a single elimination bracket that starts on Saturday.

The local team was granted a berth to play in the regional after winning the state championship on Sun., June 30, at the Dwight Mikel Sports Complex.

Winning the state championship was one of the team’s goals, CC All-Stars coach Ricky Arnett said.

“Now we’re here,” Arnett said from Glen Allen, Va. Wednesday. “We believe if the girls come out and play (well), then they’ll be very hard to beat.”

There are two different divisions at the regional tournament in pool play. Covington County is in the National Division and matches up against host Glen Allen today at 4 p.m. for its first game of pool play.

The other two teams in Covington County’s pool are Pitt County, whom it plays at noon on Friday; and Summit Point, W.V., whom it also plays on Friday, but at 4 p.m.

“We’ve got some tough games to play,” Arnett said about the caliber of teams at the tournament. “We heard the West Virginia team is pretty dang good. There’s Oviedo (Fla.) here too. They won the (12U) World Series (in 2011).”

Despite the amount of good teams in the tournament, Arnett guaranteed his girls will come out “firing.”

“We’re going to play hard and run the bases,” he said.

The No. 1 and 2 seeds from each pool advance to bracket play, which starts at 9 a.m. Saturday with the No. 2 seed from the National Division facing the No. 1 seed from the American Division. On the other side of the bracket, the No. 1 seed from the National Division will play the No. 2 seed from the American Division at 11 a.m.

Semifinal play will take place on RFP 6. The championship is slated for 11 a.m. on Sunday.
