Monroe 3, Brewton 2

In the first game of the state semifinals Wednesday morning at LBW’s Crum Foshee Field, Monroe edged Brewton 3-2 to clinch a spot in that state championship game. All runs in the game were scored in the first inning.

Brewton held a 2-0 after the top of the first inning as they used a single, two walks, a balk, a passed ball and a Monroe error to take the early lead.

In the bottom half of the inning, Monroe used four singles and a Brewton error to plate three runs to take a one-run lead.

In the top of the seventh, Brewton loaded the bases with one out and got a sacrifice fly from Malcolm Hawthorne to score Lane Chavers from third base. But Chavers left the base early and after a Monroe appeal, was called out to give Monroe the win by one.

Blaine Lee earned the win on the mound for Monroe while Chavers took the loss for Brewton.

Monroe won the state championship last year as 14-year-olds.
