Straughn has been ranked No. 5 in Class 3A by the Alabama Sports Writers Association in the preseason poll that was released today.

The Tigers finished a stellar 2012 run in the semifinals of the state football playoffs, helping to garner the ranking.

SHS is ranked above T.R. Miller and below Fayette County. FCHS ousted the Tigers in the semifinals.

Later this month, the Tigers will take part in the 2013 Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Champions Challenge preseason classic, where they will face Walter Wellborn on Aug. 24, at 5 p.m., at Cramton Bowl in Montgomery.

Opp, also in Class 3A, received 16 votes, but wasn’t ranked.

In Class 4A, Andalusia got six votes in the others receiving votes category.
