LILLIE PERDUE HOWARD

Lillie Perdue Howard, 89, born June 2, 1924, and died Aug. 7, 2013, was the first African-American female registered to vote in Covington County.

She was an educator for nearly four decades in the Covington County and Pickens County school systems. She was active until her death in the Pickens County Retired Teachers Association. She was married to the late Roy Howard of Carrollton.

She is survived by her sons, Larry Howard and Gary (Ladora) Howard; grandchildren, Breton, Royce and Lauren Howard; sisters-in-law, Adell Garrett and Rowena Perdue; brother-in-law, Warren Temple; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, former students and friends.

Visitation will be held on Thurs., Aug. 15, at Lavender’s Funeral Service, located at 11233 Hwy 17 South in Aliceville.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Fri., Aug. 16, at Pine Grove Baptist Church, located at 9004 Hwy 86 in Carrollton, with the Rev. Carlos Calhoun officiating. Interment will follow in the Pine Grove Memorial Garden Cemetery.

 

THOMAS CRAWFORD CHAVERS

Thomas Crawford Chavers, 87, of Andalusia, passed away on Mon., Aug. 12, 2013, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thurs., August 15, at Beda Baptist Church with Keahey Funeral Home directing. The Rev. Jonathan Jones and the Rev. Glenn Hutto will officiate, with special music by granddaughter, Jennifer Withrow. Interment will follow in Beda Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. tonight at Keahey Funeral Home and 30 minutes prior to services at Beda Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Mary Rosie Bell Smith Chavers of Andalusia; sons, Thomas Larry (Susan) Chavers of Fort Walton and Mark Timothy (Jenny) Chavers of Prattville; daughters, Evelyn (Dennis) Heichel of Andalusia and Dianne (Wade) Jones, both of Andalusia; brothers, Joe Mac Chavers of Rochester, N.Y., and Robert Chavers of Lakeland, Fla.; sisters, Bedie Davis of Evergreen and Nell (Hinton) Boggan of Wing; grandchildren, Denise (Wade) Ivey, Jennifer (Forrest) Withrow, Laura (Jim) Hartline, Jereme (Jessica) Jones, Jonathan (Lindsey) Jones, Shaun (Amanda) Jackson, Thomas Yancey Chavers, April Whitbeck, Stephanie (Chris) Kadleitz, Jaleh Chavers, Hayden Chavers, Sarah (Austin) Teeter; and 17 great-grandchildren

 

ETTA GREY WINDHAM

Etta Grey Windham, 83, of Andalusia, passed away Fri., Aug. 9, 2013, at her residence.

Funeral services were held on Mon., Aug. 12, at West Highland Assembly of God with the Rev. Joel Calhoun officiating. Interment followed in Andalusia Memorial Cemetery.

Survivors include her daughters, Judy (Jarrod) Cooper and Linda (Benny) Henderson of Andalusia; her grandchildren, Brian (Jacquie) Powell, Krista Howell, Dennis Henderson and Jason (Stacie) Henderson; her great-granchildren, Cole Howell, Conner Howell, Lauren Howell, Blake Powell, Gracie Henderson, Megan Owen, Chance Owen, Lyndsey Stephens and Morgan Stephens; and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Earl Windham, three sisters and seven brothers.

Pallbearers were Jerry Bond, Phillip Spivey, Gary Wayne Sutton, Randall Huckabaa, Cliff Thomas and James Sims.

JOHN CARLTON FINDLEY

John Carlton Findley, 59, of Andalusia, passed away Tues., Aug. 13, 2013, at his residence.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Thurs., Aug. 15, at Foreman Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Horace Franklin officiating. Interment will follow in Fairmount Cemetery in Red Level. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at Foreman Funeral Home.

Survivors include his sons, John Ashley (Sabrina) Findley of Dozier; Jeff (Iris) Findley of Andalusia; Jay (Stacie) Findley of Newport, Tenn; his daughter, Kimberly (Marcus) Douglas of Andalusia; his grandchildren, Ashlee Findley, Kellen Findley, Taylor Findley Jacob Douglas, Adriana Henderson and Nolan Henderson; his brothers, Roy Lee Findley, Thomas Findley, and Donald Ray (Myra) Jackson, of Andalusia; and one sister, Mary Hinson of Opp.

NETTIE MARIE HICKS

Nettie Marie Hicks, 79, of Andalusia, passed away Tues., Aug. 13, 2013, at the Andalusia Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Fri., Aug. 16, from Foreman Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Greg Cotter and the Rev. Ed Ganus officiating. Interment will follow in Oakey Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Foreman Funeral Home.

Survivors include her husband, Wead Hicks of Andalusia; her son, Donald (Debbie) Hicks; her daughter, Lisa Hicks; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; her sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Ronnie Skiff of Franklinton, N.C.; brother-in-law, Dan (Nell) Hicks of Dade City, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
