Scores of local students will have an opportunity to perform with the Missoula Children’s Theatre next week when the Covington Arts Council presents “Rapunzel.”

Based in Missoula, Mont., the MCT sends professional actor/directors to communities to audition and cast 50 to 60 local school children in a full-length, original musical production.

A variety of roles are offered. Middle and high school students are encouraged to audition for leading roles. No advance preparation is required and children should wear sneakers and comfortable clothes each day.

CAC executive director Paula Harr said auditions for students in first through 12th grades will be held beginning at 3:15 p.m., on Mon., Aug. 19, at LBW Community College.

“Students should come with a smile on their faces and the ability to speak loudly and clearly and to follow directions,” she said.

They also need to be available for 3 p.m. rehearsal all week, she said.

“It’s out of the tower and on the run as a zany cast of friends and foes help Rapunzel’s harrowing escape from the towering imprisonment of Madame Gothel,” the website describes the production. “Add dash of French flair and pinch of personal triumph and friendship and you have story you won’t forget!”

The Andalusia Junior Woman’s Club will sponsor a performance for fourth graders during the school day on Fri., Aug. 23. The public performance is set for 2 p.m. on Sat., Aug. 24, in the Dixon Center of LBWCC. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students.

Covington Electric Cooperative is the corporate sponsor, and Southeast Alabama Gas District and Sunsouth John Deere of Andalusia are corporate donors.

“Even if you don’t have a child performing, please come and watch,” Harr said. “These children will have worked so hard all week, and the show will be great.”
