ACT I presents King and I next weekend

Published 8:31 am Saturday, September 14, 2013

Johnny Brewer and Barbara Peek are cast in the lead roles in next weekend’s ACT I production of The King and I.

Peek is Anna Leonowens, governess to the children of King Mongkut of Siam (Brewer) in the early 1860s. The plot relates to her experiences as the British schoolteacher hired as part of the king’s drive to modernize his country. The relationship between the two is marked by conflict, as well as by a love that neither can admit.

The musical, which is based on the novel Anna and the King of Siam, features many familiar Broadway tunes, “We Kiss in a Shadow,” “Hello, Young Lovers,” “Getting to Know You,” “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” and “Shall We Dance.”

Paula Sue Duebelt and Ronda Ricks are co-directors of the production.

ACT I is sponsored by the Covington Arts Council.

Show times are at 7 p.m. on Thurs., Sept. 19, Sat., Sept. 21, and Mond., Sept. 23, and at 2 p.m. on Sun., Sept. 22.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at Ansley Place, Brooks Hardware and Harold’s Furniture.
