Two homecoming games highlight the state’s college football action today.
Top-ranked Alabama hosts winless Georgia State, starting at 11:21 a.m., at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.
Troy hosts the University of South Alabama at noon at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Crimson Tide enters the contest after a big 25-0 win over Ole Miss last week.
Alabama held the Rebels on several fourth downs in a good defensive effort.
Troy is aiming for a win over the Jaguars after going on a three-game losing skid. Last week, the Trojans lost 38-31 to Duke in non-conference play, and lost 62-7 to Mississippi State in a game that was over early.
USA just came off a 31-24 loss to Tennessee. The Jags were one score away from tying the game with less than two minutes left in the game, but an interception iced the game.
Other notable games today include No. 25 Maryland at No. 8 Florida State; No. 15 Washington at No. 5 Stanford; No. 24 Ole Miss at Auburn; and No. 4 Ohio State at No. 16 Northwestern.
The sixth week of college football started on a good note, where Texas barely beat Iowa State, 31-30.
The Longhorns scored a late touchdown in the fourth after a controversial no-call on what appeared to be a Texas fumble by Johnathan Gray after an Iowa State defender grabbed the ball and ran down the field, thinking it was a turnover.
Officials ruled the ball down by contact, and that set up a 2nd-and-goal situation, where quarterback Case McCoy punched it in from 1-yard for the go-ahead TD.
