Straughn’s girls finished runner up at the St. James Tip Off Tournament Saturday, falling 36-34 to Loachapoka in the championship game.

The Lady Tigers (3-1) showed good effort on the floor throughout the tournament, but made too many early-season mistakes, SHS coach Scott Kinsaul said.

“They’re working hard,” Kinsaul said. “It’s just early season stuff and working ourselves out of it. It was a good weekend for us.”

In the early game on Saturday, the Lady Tigers beat Providence Christian 40-28.

PCA played SHS in zone on defense, which was the first time the Lady Tigers had seen the scheme, Kinsaul said.

“We handled it pretty well,” the coach said. “Our defense was real good. They had a hard time with our pressure.

“I was real pleased again with the effort. All weekend long we had great effort, but again, we’ve got to cut down on turnovers and be smart with the basketball.”

Straughn’s girls will next play Nov. 25-27 in their annual Thanksgiving tournament.
