When Millie McCullough was a teacher, art was her escape.

“I would head to my studio and tell my husband, ‘I’m going to my happy place now.’ ”

When her hobby – her art, and the make-and-take art lessons she offered at her dining room table – began taking over her house, she thought perhaps she should look for a different location.

What evolved is now My Happy Place, a retail outlet and make-and-take art studio. At My Happy Place, Millie sells the original handiwork of area artists, as well as brand names.

This weekend, she’s offering a bit of happiness for moms. Kids are invited to Open Studio, giving moms a chance to shop. Kids can choose from Aubie, Big All or Christmas tree canvases, and the cost is only $15. Parents are encouraged to call ahead to reserve a space, and the service is offered from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Next weekend, at 2 p.m. on Sat., Dec. 7, adults can participate in make and take art classes, chooses to make a Christmas tree, reindeer or Christmas ornament door hanger.

Later in December, another children’s make-and-take event is planned when they can make an ornament or a handprint Santa Claus. Seating will be limited.

On Black Friday, My Happy Place will offer hourly specials with door prizes and giveaways.

There also will be prizes for the best game day dressers.

“Its for anybody who comes in with really good game day attire,” Millie said. “You have to impress me,” she said, adding that wildy and wacky is better.

There also is a weekend trunk show of Touchstone jewelry. Touchstone is a Swarovski company.

“This is a great line,” she said, “And it’s not in Alabama yet. It exclusively available here.”

Purses, monogrammed items, jewelry, housewares and other accessories are available at My Happy Place.

“Everybody always leaves a gift shop happy,” Millie said.
