Two young cancer patients received a standing ovation Thursday night when they were named the recipients of the Chamber of Commerce’s annual T.J. Fleming Inspirational Award.
Megan Kelley and Kennedy Cleghorn, who are each battling forms of cancer, have served as sources of inspiration countywide by rallying student bodies and exemplifying the true embodiment of grace under pressure.
Kelley, a senior at Andalusia High School, continues her fight against Ewing’s Sarcoma.
She is the daughter of Donna and Brian Kelley. She was recently chosen as the AHS 2013 homecoming queen.
Cleghorn is a freshman at Pleasant Home School and is the daughter of Nicky and Emily Cleghorn. Her ovarian cancer fight motivated students to send care packages to others undergoing chemotherapy locally. She is now in the recovery process.
The award is presented in memory of T.J. Fleming, a 2008 Florala High School graduate and athlete who played baseball at LBW Community College.
Fleming was diagnosed with a very rare type of glandular cancer in his head/throat region in January 2010. This cancer spread at a very rapid pace, but not before Fleming touched the lives of many. He died in May of that year.
