County appoints Cotton, Sconiers to area boards

The Covington County Commission named two appointees to county boards during their regular meeting Wednesday morning.

Don Cotton was unanimously approved for a seat on the board of the Southeast Regional Planning and Development Committee, while Linda Sconiers was unanimously approved for reappointment to the Organized Community Action board.

In other business, the commission:

• approved a request allowing for the purchase of computer components from the State of Alabama bid list;

• approved the ratification of the decision to close county offices Thurs., Jan. 30 and Fri., Jan. 31 due to the winter storm, in order to qualify for FEMA funds should any become both available and applicable to the event;

• approved a resolution allowing the Covington Area Transit System (CATS) to forge agreements with third parties;

• approved an agreement with the Choctawhatchee Pea and Yellow Rivers Watershed Authority to stabilize a boat ramp access road at Givens bridge, including the approximately $4,000 needed from the county to match grant funding;

• approved a resolution to participate in the Association of County Commissioners of Alabama liability insurance fund for a period of three years, beginning Jan. 1, 2015 and ending Dec., 31, 2017;

• approved FY2015, the annual tax levy for county and city school systems;

• approved a recommendation to the Alabama Beverage Control that a liquor license be granted to Adams Bar and Package, located on Ala. Hwy. 52 in Opp;

•approved a request by Covington County Sheriff Dennis Meeks to declare a 2005 Ford Crown Victoria as surplus, sell the vehicle with funds resulting from the sale deposited into the general fund and purchase a new vehicle;

• approved (retroactively) out of state travel for a Covington County Sheriff’s investigator for the dates of Feb., 10, 2014-Feb., 14, 2014 for training purposes, and approved out of state travel for the same investigator for the dates March, 10, 2014-March, 13, 2014 for training purposes.
