Fair weather expected for Florala fair

If you didn’t get your fill of the fair last fall in Andalusia, make plans to head towards the state line next week as James Gang Amusements will set up shop in Florala beginning Tuesday.

The James Gang, which is also responsible for the annual fair in Andalusia, will bring the festivities to the shores at Lake Jackson March 4-8 for the first annual Spring Fling on the Lake to benefit the June 24 Masonic Celebration.

In early February, organizer Kennith Jackson sought and received approval for the fair from the Florala City Council. Jackson told members the festivities will not only help raise money for the Masonic Celebration in June, but should also bring added dollars to Florala businesses throughout the week.

Jackson said the fair is something the 24th of June Committee has wanted to bring to Florala for some time.

“We try every year to get something like this for June 24, but there’s just never anyone available at that time,” Jackson said. “Jesse James, who runs the carnival in Andalusia every year, is going to bring this to us. They couldn’t do it on June 24, but they did have an opening (in March).”

Fair gates open Tuesday at 6 p.m. and will close at 10 p.m. nightly through Thurs., March 6. An armband good for the three nights may be purchased for $10. The following two nights, Fri., March 7 and Sat., March 8, the fair will be open from 6 until 11 p.m., and an armband may be purchased for $15.

Jackson said proceeds from next week’s fair will go to benefit the June 24 Masonic Celebration, which will be held in downtown Florala this year for the 144th consecutive time.

“Every year we have the Alligator Trot, the parade and the beauty pageant (at the Masonic Celebration),” Jackson said. “All of the money stays in the community. The pageant winners get a scholarship for college, and everything left over goes towards the next year’s event.”
