There are 11 teams currently raising money for Covington County’s Relay for Life, set for April 25, but chairman Larry Brown said Monday he’d love to see more teams join the effort.

“It’s not too late,” Brown said. “I’d like to see us have 20 teams this year.”

This year’s event has a Super Heroes theme. Brown said the Super Heroes are looking to raise $100,000 for the American Cancer Society.

“We did meet that goal last year, and we’d like to meet and exceed that goal in 2014,” Brown said.

Organizers will meet at 6 p.m. on Tues., March 11, at Holiday Inn Express. Anyone who is interested in putting together a team or volunteering is encouraged to attend.

Brown said many teams fundraise year round.

“We figured if we started our effort at the first of the year, teams would have at least four months to prepare,” he said. “There is still time to raise money.”

A number of fundraisers are planned, including:

• A Relay for Life pageant, set for March 15 and coordinated by Christy Norris. Registration continues through March 7. Entry fee is $25, with an additional $10 fee for the first entry in the photogenic category, and an additional $3 for each additional photo. For entry forms, contact Brown at 488-3416 or Norris at 208-9490.

Rehearsal will be from 10 a.m. until noon on Sat., March 15, with the event beginning at 1 p.m. at LBW. It is open for ages 0 to 18.

• Southeast Alabama Gas District is holding its annual fishing tournament on Sat., March 29.

Registration for the tournament is $90 per boat with an optional $10 per boat big fish registration. First place will receive $600; second place, $250; third place, $150; and the Big Fish prize will be $120. Registration should be mailed to SEAGD Bass Tournament, c/o Reba Gant, P.O.
