Several local residents braved Tuesday’s inclement weather to celebrate Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, the last day of revelry before Lent begins.

The first day of Lent, known as Ash Wednesday, derives its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of adherents as a celebration and reminder of human mortality, and as a sign of mourning and repentance to God.

Ash Wednesday services are planned today at First Presbyterian, First Methodist, Christ the King Catholic and St. Mary’s Episcopal churches.
