Foul weather delays Florala fair

The lights from this year’s Covington County Fair drew many to their promise of fun, and made for a beautiful mid-October scene in Andalusia.

With the weather far from fair, the rides at the actual fair in Florala have been mostly still this week, but organizers say they are looking for better luck beginning today.

Organizer Kenneth Jackson said the weather has only allowed the fair to open once since it was scheduled to have begun Tuesday.

“We opened up (Wednesday) night and ran things,” Jackson said Thursday. “Wednesday night was the only night we’ve been able to open because of the rain, but we had a pretty good turnout.”

The fair was once again cancelled last night due to weather concerns, but Jackson said the next few evenings should give people a chance to make up for missed time.

“We had to cancel because of safety concerns,” he said. “But, we are trying to hold out and see what happens. The rest of the weekend is supposed to be just beautiful, so hopefully people will come out.”

Jackson said more than just fun hinges on a good crowd showing up to the fair, since all proceeds got towards the annual June 24th Masonic Celebration, a tradition in Florala. He added that bringing the fair to town was something that has been in the works for years.

“We try every year to get something like this for June 24, but there’s just never anyone available at that time,” Jackson told Florala City Council members in February. “Jesse James, who runs the carnival in Andalusia every year, is going to bring this to us. They couldn’t do it on June 24, but they did have an opening (in March).”

Jackson told council members he expected the fair to bring crowds to Florala businesses, much like the Masonic Celebration does each year. Now, Jackson said he still has high hopes for the remaining two days of the fair.

As for a possible extension, Jackson said James Gang Amusements will have the final say on any possible “make up days.”

“I don’t know what else they have coming up,” he said. “So, we’ll just have to wait and see.”

Fair gates are scheduled to be open tonight at Lake Jackson from 6 until 11 p.m., with armbands allowing entry for both nights available for $15.
