The Andalusia Kiwanis C0319 Sock Hop prep-webenter has been abuzz with activity this week as members of the Andalusia Adult Activity Center prepare for one their biggest annual events.
“People know it as the “Hoe-Down,” but this year we are calling it the “Sock Hop,” AAAC Director Sonja Godwin said. “This our 19th year.”
Like most things the AAAC does, Godwin said the completely free event began as a way to give older adults an added social activity, but added it has evolved into a something more.
“Anyone 21 or over can come,” she said.
This year’s event was changed to from a “Hoe-Down,” to a “Sock Hop,” when the AAAC adopted a 1950s diner theme for the 2014 installment.
Godwin said doors will open Thursday at 8:30 a.m. and will close at 2:30 p.m.
“We usually have about a thousand people coming from as far as Anniston,” Godwin said.
This year’s event is scheduled to include a gospel performance by Blue Braden from 9 until 10 a.m., as well as a performance by The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Elvis Presley, at 12:30 p.m. From 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Godwin said the Lurleen B. Wallace Community College Choir will perform.
In addition to entertainment, Godwin said hundreds of dollars worth of door prizes will be given out and contests for best costume, best banner and best “Twist,” will be held, with cash prizes for first through third places in all categories.
Godwin said the community always responds well to the event, and expects another strong showing Thursday.
“They love it,” she said with a smile.
