The conviction of a local man on domestic violence charges on Thursday marked the third conviction in a week, after as many jury trials were held in Covington County circuit court.

Covington County District Attorney Walt Merrell said a jury convicted 30-year-old Mathew Tracy Buchanan of domestic violence III.

Merrell said the charges against Buchanan stemmed from an argument with his girlfriend, which became physically violent.

During the trial, the victim testified that Buchanan punched and dragged her, pushed her into a wall and slammed her head in her car door as she tried to leave her residence, Merrell said.

According to Merrell, Covington County Sheriff’s deputies who responded to the 911 call described the victim as frightened and bloodied, and Buchanan as angry and tense.

Circuit Judge Charles A. “Lex” Short has set Buchanan’s sentencing hearing for May 14.

Earlier in the week, John David Hughes was convicted of attempted murder, burglary ad reckless endangerment and Janna Nelson was convicted of attempting to possess a controlled substance.
