Opp’s Landon Hughes almost pitched a perfect game and Bobcats baseball coach Michael Cassady earned his 100th career victory during a 9-0 decision over Elba on Monday night in the Butch Youmans Memorial Tournament at Merchants Field.

Hughes faced 18 batters through the first six innings. He went 18 up and 18 down, getting nobody on base.

Cassady said Hughes did an excellent job on the mound for the team.

“It was amazing watching him play like he did,” Cassady said.

The perfect game was broken up in the top of the seventh with one out when Elba’s John Spicer hit the ball to right.

Cassady said the next batter hit a fly out, and Brady Vidich “hosed” Spicer for the final out at third base for a double play to end the game.

Additionally, Cassady said Hughes faced 21 batters total, which was the minimum in the 72-pitch game. For the game, Hughes struck out nine batters in seven innings while allowing no runs on one hit.

Hughes, Vidich, Zane Hollinghead, Colt Harrell, Ethan Davis, Chris Weeks, Holt Hall and Jordan Creech had one hit each to lead the Bobcats.

Cassady said he didn’t realize he was going to win his 100th game.

“I knew I was close at it,” the coach said. “I won a lot of the wins because of the kids. It has nothing to do with me.”

The Bobcats will be back in action today at 11:30 a.m. against W.S. Neal on Senn Field, and then at 7 p.m. against T.R. Miller on Merchants.
