This year’s Relay for Life event is officially less than a month away, but plenty of Relay events are scheduled for the weeks leading up to the big day.

As of Tuesday night, 12 teams and 212 participants had registered to participate in this year’s event, which raises money for the American Cancer Society.

This year’s event has a “Super Heroes” theme. Relay Chairman Larry Brown said those heroes are looking to raise $100,000 for the American Cancer Society.

“We did meet that goal last year, and we’d like to meet and exceed that goal in 2014,” Brown told The Star-News last month.

Brown said many of the teams involved raise money year round, but many fundraising events are coming in the next several weeks.

Fundraising events coming up include:

• The sixth annual Arrest-A-Friend event, sponsored by the Andalusia Police Department. “Warrants” will be executed Thursday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. for “wanted persons” around town. Those “arrested” may pay their own bond, for $10, or may choose to shoot for the maximum bond of $100.

The Arrest-A-Friend fundraiser has been the largest generator of monies of any one-day fundraiser for the past six years. The goal for this year’s event is $10,000 and the APD hopes to exceed that amount with the help of the community.

• A Super Hero Bash Saturday at Springdale to raise funds for the Andalusia Regional Hospital’s Relay team. The event, which is scheduled from 7 until 10 p.m., will include a costume contest for the super heroes, or villains, in attendance, a silent auction, music, dancing, finger foods and photography. Participants must be 18 years of age or older, and tickets are $10 per person. For tickets, or more information, calls may be directed to Kaci Perry at 334.222.8466, ext. 7015.

• A spring plant sale to benefit the Covington County Master Gardeners’ Relay team. The event will also be held Saturday, but will take place from 8 a.m. until noon at the USDA Agricultural Service Center on the Southern Bypass, Hwy. 55 in Andalusia. An “Ask the Experts,” session will be held, and information and pamphlets will be given with the purchase of a plant. Those who bring a soil sample may also have its PH tested on site for $2. Just a half a cup of soil is sufficient. Plants for sale will include daylilies, hydrangeas, drift roses, vegetable and master gardeners “Pass Along Plants.”

• The City of Andalusia Relay team will have a plant, book and sack lunch sale Thurs. and Fri., April 10 and 11, on the Square.

The plant sale will include annuals, perennials, grasses, fruit trees and shrubs.

The book sale will include books, magazines, video tapes and music CDs.

On Thursday, the sack lunches are $5 and include two hot dogs. On Friday, the lunches are $6 and include a BBQ sandwich Pre-order lunches, call 222-6891.
