Covington County Sheriff’s Department deputies responding to a theft report Wednesday night caught two men with stolen property, one of which also had a few other illegal items on his person.

According to Chief Deputy David Anderson, 26-year-old Steven Philip Burfield and 25-year-old James Ryan Knudson were arrested for theft and burglary after deputies responded to a call near Florala. Burfield was also arrested on drug charges.

“(The deputy) was dispatched to Pete McGee Road outside of Florala to a call of suspects stealing material from a landowner,” Anderson said. “He found the suspects in a truck with a trailer loaded down with junk iron that (they) did not have permission to take.”

Burfield was also found to be in possession of an unspecified controlled substance, as well as marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He was taken into custody on charges of burglary III, theft of property II, possession of marijuana II, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Burfield was booked into the Covington County Jail on a $40,000 bond. Knudson was charged with burglary III and theft of property II and booked on a $20,000 bond.

Anderson said the case has been turned over to a sheriff’s department investigator and additional charges are possible.
