Patel, Butler compete at Louisiana tourney

Andalusia Isshinryu Karate students Taj Patel and Allen Butler competed in the 2014 Holiday in Dixie Martial Arts Championships at Byrd High School in Shreveport, La., on Sat., April 5.

Competitors from several different styles of martial arts, including karate, taekwondo, kung fu and jujitsu participated in the annual event.

Schools from Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Arkansas and Alabama were represented.

The tournament had divisions in weapons, kata, fighting and Chanbara (sword fighting).

Butler finished third in black belt youth weapons; fourth in black belt youth kata; and first in black belt youth fighting and Chanbara.

Patel finished third in brown belt weapons; and fourth in brown belt kata.

Andalusia students are preparing for the South Alabama Karate Open, which will be hosted by the local class at Straughn High School on June 7.

Competitors from all over the Southeast are slated to attend.
