River Falls hopes for commerce on rezoned corner

The Town of River Falls’ planning and zoning commission recommended that a 6.6-acre piece of land be changed to commercial in hopes of a business locating there.

The property, which is located on the east side of Hwy 55, at the corner of Styles Avenue and Hwy 55, is listed for sale through Realtor Elane Jennings.

The town council is expected to vote on the re-zoning at its June meeting.

The initial request was for the property to be grandfathered in as residential but also be zoned as commercial.

Planning chairman Don McLeod said there was no provision that allowed for a grandfather clause without a home being there.

“Being blunt, it has to be either residential or commercial,” he said. “In the future, we could entertain changing it back, but hopefully we’ll have a new business go there.”

Jennings, who was present at the public hearing, said she would like for it to be commercial.

She also said she had an anonymous person interested in the property, if it becomes commercial.

“I’ll be happy to send a letter to anyone you want to let them know it’s commercial,” she said.

Another resident asked if it would be possible for a church to purchase the property.

That decision would be up to the town council.

“I think that could very well fall under it,” Mayor Patricia Gunter said.
