Opp holds spring sports banquet

Opp held its spring sports banquet Monday night at the high school auditorium.

While there, the Bobcats baseball, softball, tennis, golf and outdoor track teams were recognized for their successes in their respective seasons.

The baseball team finished in the third round of the Class 3A state playoffs, where they fell in a sweep to Sipsey Valley, who is playing for the state title this week in Montgomery. The softball team ended its season last weekend at the south regional in Gulf Shores.

The tennis and golf teams ended their seasons in the playoffs as well as the golf team wrapped up at sub-state, and the tennis team finished at sectionals.

For baseball, Opp’s Ethan Davis, Landon Hughes, Holt Hall and Jacob Johnson were named Team Captains; Davis and Hughes were named Top Pitchers; Eli Johnson won the Offensive Award; Brady Vidich and Matt Pierce won the Defensive Award; Colt Harrell won the Guts Award; Dakota King won the Bobcat Award; and Zane Hollinghead won the Coach’s Award.

For softball, Opp’s Courtney Chatham won the Most Valuable Player Award; Laiken Free was selected as the Defensive Player of the Year; Kelley Pierce was selected as the Offensive Player of the Year; Paige Johnson won the Coach’s Award; and Pierce and Free were named Team Captains.

Opp’s Matthew McCulloch and Sarah Lindsey were given awards in tennis; Clay Lolley (lowest score), Bradley Cassady (lowest average) and Avery Stanfield (MVP) were given awards in golf; and Jonathon Hines was given an award for winning the Class 3A state championship for winning in the 300-meter hurdle event at the state outdoor track meet last week.
