Austin Franklin likes being in control.

The Florala sophomore was in control of his command so much this season that he earned himself a spot as a first-team pitcher on the 2014 Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Class 1A All-State baseball team.

“First of all, it’s pretty exciting to be recognized by a group of people who are all across the state, especially out of all of the players in the state,” Franklin said. “To get this means a lot. I’m just thankful and happy and excited to receive an award like this.”

Franklin finished the season with a 6-2 record on the mound. He struck out 135 batters (average of 20.5 per seven innings) and allowed 17 earned runs out of 19 total. He walked 31 batters and pitched three shutouts.

Franklin’s earned run average was 2.59 and whip count was a whopping 1.17.

When asked what his keys were this season, Franklin said they revolved around throwing good pitches.

“On the mound, I just worry about throwing strikes and letting my defense work,” he said. “If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be where I am. I’m thankful to have a group of guys behind me like they were because they basically did all of the work.

“I’m proud to say that those guys were behind me,” he said.

Usually when a pitcher is having a good season, he or she tends to get in a groove and the sky would be the roof from that point onward.

For Franklin, getting off to a good start this season was the big difference with him establishing a strong presence on the mound.

“I had a great first start and that really set the tone for the rest of the season,” he said. “I just worked off every start, getting better and trying to help my team win.”

Piling up a high strikeout count wasn’t easy, he said.

Those who have seen the sophomore throw probably noticed that he uses his velocity to his advantage.

“I try to work the corners and that’s something that I definitely try to do,” Franklin said of his pitching. “There comes a point where speed doesn’t matter, and it’s your job to locate pitches and let your defense work.”

The most runs Franklin gave up this season was in the Wildcats’ first-round playoff loss to Brantley. He gave up six of the Bulldogs’ seven runs.

Franklin said he knew that he’d have to locate well against BHS.

“Going into Brantley, I knew they were a good-hitting team,” he said. “I knew that I’d have to locate and that my defense would have to help me out. I Just focused on throwing strikes and everything. They’re a good team. So, you have to give credit to them.”

Franklin started playing baseball at around 5 or 6 years old. He grew up in Florala, but played in the Paxton Dixie Youth League across the state line in Florida.

“It’s become something that I really love,” he said about playing baseball. “Especially for me being a pitcher, you put in input on every play, and you control every pitch. It’s your game.

“You control everything that happens on that play,” he said. “It’s something that I like to have in my hands. It’s up to me and I just go from there.”

Only a sophomore, Franklin said he’s received letters from Alabama, Florida State, Ole Miss, Miami and Stanford, and that he’s been in phone contact with UA and FSU.

Franklin is the son of Lisa Franklin Jackson and Mark Franklin of Florala.
