“A good time for a good cause” will be held this weekend to help raise money for an Opp woman battling a rare form of ovarian cancer.

Janet Anderson was diagnosed with malignant mixed Mullerian tumor (MMMT) or ovarian carcinsarcoma, in February.

“She had been having some trouble,” said Debra Jones, Anderson’s sister. “She put it off as it was nothing. She just took Tylenol, but finally went to the doctor on Monday and on Tuesday she was having surgery to remove a softball size mass.”

Jones said the cancer is a very aggressive form of cancer and that 1-3 percent of all women have this form of cancer.

“Dr. (Mark) Boatright said he hadn’t seen a case here in more than 10 years,” Jones said.

Jones said doctors were able to remove all of the mass they saw.

“And everything looked good,” she said. “She went back five weeks later, and when she went to the doctor at UAB, he ordered a CT scan.”

Jones said a 6 centimeter mass was found in the vaginal cavity.

“Her options were surgery or to start chemo,” she said. “It usually occurs in women over 66, and Janet is only 45.”

Jones said Anderson works at the office at Opp Middle School and has been able to work only one week out of three weeks due to chemo.

“We do know the chemo has stopped the growth,” Jones said.

A benefit is set for Saturday to help raise money for medical expenses.

The event will run from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., at Angus and Stacie Edgar’s barn on Hwy. 84 East just past the Opp Skating Rink.

There will be live country and gospel music featuring Homegrown, Road Dusters, Riverchase and Grace Junction.

Barbecue sandwich plates will be able for $8, which includes potato salad, baked beans and homemade cake.

To reserve your ticket for a sandwich, call 764-3785, 493-7898 or 493-6730.
