Opp fought a hard battle with Brewton Tuesday night, but the Bobcats ended up falling 9-7 in the 2014 Cal Ripken 10U District Championship at the Opp Sports Complex.

Brewton defeated Opp 12-2 in the first championship game on Monday to force the winner-take-all game.

After falling to Opp in its first game, the Brewton All-Stars fought their way through the bottom bracket, defeating Covington County, East Brewton and Andalusia.

Games were called Sunday because of the weather and subsequently moved to Monday night, when Brewton defeated Andalusia 6-2 and then Opp in the 10-run victory.

In the winner-take-all game, it was a back-and-forth contest between both teams.

Brewton took an early 2-1 lead in the first inning, but Opp bounced back in the third to tie it 2-all.

The Bobcats held Brewton in the bottom of the third, but the eventual champions countered with three runs in the fourth.

One night after pitching a 1-hitter against the Bobcats, Jackson Flores came in for Brewton in the top of the fifth, where the Bobcats figured the ace pitcher out well.

Robbie Gafford reached on an error to put two runners on with one out. Cal Ashberry then walked to load the bases, when one batter later, Landen Rogers hit an RBI single to cut it to one run at 4-3.

With two outs on the board, Walt Spurlin came through in clutch fashion with a two-run single to give the Bobcats a 5-4 lead.

One batter later, Ethan Cox hit a two-run double for a 7-4 lead.

Brewton, as it did the entire tournament after its first loss, found a way to come back in the bottom of the same frame.

Two runs each came on a double and a passed ball; and one scored on a squeeze play.

Brewton held it together in the final inning, retiring the side.

Opp’s Tanner Hall got in a groove late on the mound, and finished the complete outing. He gave up nine runs on seven hits and struck out four batters.

Spurlin went 3-for-3; and Cox went 2-for-4 to lead the Bobcats.

With their runner-up finish, the Bobcats earned a berth to play in the state tournament.

In other tournament action, Andalusia put together a good effort against the Bobcats, but fell 10-5 on Saturday in the winner’s bracket finals. Additionally, Brewton eliminated Covington County with a 11-0 win.
