Local team will play at regional; 8Us finish runner up Saturday

Covington County’s 12U All-Star softball team beat Sylacauga 11-0 to win the state tournament in Alexander City on Saturday.

The local team finished the tournament without losing a game, where it defeated Sylacauga 14-10; Weedowee 15-0; and Alex City 16-0 in pool play. In the first elimination game, CC beat Alex City, 10-0, before dispatching of Sylacauga in the championship.

“They played real well,” Covington County 12U All-Stars coach Keith Gunter said.

Gunter said the girls got off to a sluggish start in their first win over Sylacauga, but “hung in there and kept their wits about them.”

“You can tell they were on it in that last game,” he said. “They were getting dialed in on their bats.”

Gunter said the defense played well all weekend, and the bats woke up at the end.

CC outscored its opponents 66-10 at the tournament.

With this win, the CC team earned a berth to play in the Southeast Regional Tournament in Morgantown, N.C. The tournament will be held July 16-20.

To help with the expenses of the trip, CC set up a fundraising website, where people can donate money. Visit www.gofundme.com/b3tkcc to make a donation.

“We just appreciate any support we can get,” Gunter said. “We were blessed with good pitching, catching, fielding and batting.”

In 8U action, Covington County finished runner up after falling 16-1 in the championship game.

The CC 8U squad chose not to travel to play in the regional tournament later this month.
