Florala residents could see an increase in residential garbage rates beginning in October, based on proposals for service opened Monday.
Earlier this summer, the council sought bids for service, as its current provider would not extend its contract past Sept. 30.
At present, city residents pay $18.50 per month for service, and the city is charged $12.85 per month.
Three providers offered proposals for service. Although the council took no action pending a closer analysis of the bids, it appears the city will pay at least $16.25 per month per user, or a minimum increase of 27 percent. Offering proposals were:
• MDI. The company’s proposal was $16.99 per month for weekly pick-up, or $13,761.90 per month, based on the current number of customers.
• BFI. The company’s proposal was $16.25 for the first cart and $12.19 for additional carts, or $13,999.45 per month, based on current customers. This bid allows a price increase each year based on the consumer price index for the industry.
• Waste Pro of Florida. The company’s proposal was $16.75 per month for the first cart and $4.25 per month for additional carts, or $13,567.59 per month, based on current customers.
The monthly cost to the city includes services to the city and to the Head Start Center.
At present, the city pays $998 for those services.
The council expects to award bids at its Aug. 25 meeting.
