Large e-billboard could come to Florala

The Florala City Council took no action on a request to erect a 160 sq. ft. electronic billboard on Hwy. 331 in front of Betty’s Big Bang Fireworks.

Leon Franklin of Community Sign Service made the request. He said Adventures Unlimited in Milton specifically wanted space on a digital sign in Florala, and that he expects other Gulf Coast advertisers would also buy space.

The sign, which would be 30 feet off the ground, would be 8 feet by 20 feet, and would have eight rotating images.

If the council approves the variance to its sign ordinance, Franklin said, the city could have one of the “faces” twice each year for 30 days each to advertise special events, or to promote local merchants.

Councilman Marvin Williford Sr. made a motion to approve the variance, and Councilwoman Debra Inabinett seconded. But when a vote was taken, only Williford voted in favor; others wanted more information and time to study the proposal.

Mayor Pro Tem Hazel Lee, who presided at the meeting, promised Franklin the council would take action at its next meeting.
