Two weeks after Opp High School Band Director Randy Hughey approached the Opp City Council requesting monetary support for its biggest fundraiser, the council voted unanimously to give the organization $1,000.
At the end of Monday night’s meeting, Councilman Arlin Davis brought up the topic again, and made a motion for the contribution.
Davis said he had attended Saturday’s Meet the Bobcats event, and the band performed.
The council agreed the band brings a lot to the city.
At the first meeting in August, Hughey, who has been the band director at OHS for 21 years asked for the city’s contribution to the Little Big Horn Marching Band competition, which is set for Oct. 18.
“We are the longest running competition in the Southeast,” he said at the meeting. “We have never failed to make a date.”
Hughey reminded the council that the competition is a huge economic boost and provides publicity for the city of Opp.
Patrons and bands come to Opp and purchase gas, eat at restaurants and some spend the night.
Proceeds from the competition go to fund the self-sufficient. Opp City Schools only provides Hughey’s salary and pays the band room’s utility bill.
