Opp edges Hillcrest in nailbiter

Opp stopped Hillcrest-Evergreen from scoring a 2-point conversion with no time left to edge the Jaguars 34-32 on Friday night.

The Bobcats endured a lengthy weather delay prior to the game. The rain also made its presence known at halftime and in the second half.

The Jaguars scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to cut into Opp’s healthy lead by two at 28-26.

Opp went on to score its game winner when Ty White punched it in from 4 yards out with 1:28 left in the contest.

With time ticking away at the clock, HHS converted on a Hail Mary pass from 35 yards and on fourth down, but the failed 2-point conversion gave the Bobcats the region win.

OHS improves to 2-1 overall, and 1-0 in Class 3A, Region 1, and luckily have an open week before taking on Geneva at home on Sept. 19.

White scored the first TD from 2 yards and with the 2-point conversion, the Bobcats led 8-0 after Hillcrest gave up a fumble on its first offensive possession.

The Jags tied it on their second drive and the game stayed 8-8 with a few minutes left in the first half, when Orlando Lacey rushed in from 12 yards. With the extra point, OHS led 14-8 at halftime.

With 8:30 left in the third quarter, Cale Pierce caught a 2-yard TD reception from Lacey and the Bobcats took a healthy 22-8 lead.

HHS scored on its next drive and it was 22-14 three-quarters left in the third quarter.

With more than 6 minutes left in the same quarter, Hennis Washington scampered in from 38 yards in the rain to make it 28-14.

Washington finished with 54 yards on five carries. Lacey had 48 yards on five carries and a touchdown.

Lacey went 6-of-12 for 119 yards with a TD and in interception in the air.
