Andy passes $17.1M budget

The Andalusia City Council Tuesday passed a $17.1 million budget for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1.

The biggest portion of the budget, 15.9 percent is allocated for miscellaneous expenses. Of this, $2 million is matching funds for the South Three Notch street project, and $175,000 is for streetlights.

The budget also leaves $600,000 unallocated for contingencies. State law requires municipalities to leave a portion of its revenues in reserve.

Projected departmental expenses follow:

• Adult Activity – $495,095

• Library – $266,275

• Golf Course – $363,587

• Mapping – $250,453

• Inspection – $278,400

• Maintenance – $429,426

• Horticulture – $145,679

• Parks and Rec – $1,097,884

• Police – $2,184,718

• Animal Control – $131,566

• Street – $1,084,394

• Sanitation – $389,013

• Landfill – $126,693

• Recycling – $294,310

• Education – $2,151,000

• Long-term debt – $1,515,031

• Miscellaneous – $2,719,000

In other business, the council:

• Abated properties at 101 Princeton St., 213 Allen Ave. and 109 Dixon St. for weeds

• Vacated a portion of Owens Street.

• Vacated an undeveloped portion of Crabapple Street in the Green Acres subdivision.

• Vacated an alley in the Meadowbrook subdivision that was never developed.
