AlaWeb operations to cease next week

In a little less than a week, AlaWeb Internet Services will cease operations.
The company announced in late June it would close effective Oct. 1.
“AlaWeb Internet Services has proudly provided quality Internet services in the South Alabama area for more than a decade,” Ed Short, Covington Electric president said in an email to customers on Wednesday. “As communication technologies have improved and access to these technologies has become more competitive, AlaWeb accounts have continued to decline each year.”
The declining number of users at AlaWeb makes it no longer feasible to continue offering any Internet services after Oct. 1, officials said.
“This includes all wireless Internet, email only accounts and WildBlue Satellite services.”
AlaWeb was begun in 1996 by Jimmy Caton and Paul Spears Sr.
Covington Rural Services, a subsidiary of CEC, later partnered with AlaWeb to promote Internet services in the rural area.
