Straughn High School students escaped serious injury after a head-on collision on Soil Surface Road, Tuesday evening.

The vehicles met in a sharp curve that Alabama State Trooper Justin Vann measured to be no more than 16 feet wide.

The road is too narrow and should have 9 feet per vehicle available, Vann said.

“That’s just a bad curve; that’s all there is to it,” he said. “But dirt roads are sketchy. It’s cutting it close.”

Witnesses said two students, passengers in the cars, were injured and transported to a local hospital.

Brock Hammett, driver of the Ford pickup, and Hunter Cauley, driver of the Impala, both escaped serious injuries.

However, Cauley’s mother said she would have his wrist examined.
