Monday just happens to be a school holiday, and also School Day at the 2014 Kiwanis Covington County Fair, which opens for the first time at 2 p.m.

Kiwanis Fair Board president Rex Jones said admission will be free for anyone 18 and under on Monday afternoons, and arm bands will be $15 from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. After 6 p.m., admission is $6 for adults and $4 for children and seniors, and armbands are $18.

Kicking off the fair with School Day is just one of the additions Jones and his committee have made this year. In addition to the traditional pageants and talent contests, this year there also will be a Tug-of-War contest between teams of football players and teams of cheerleaders, and a hotdog eating contest.

The Tug-of-War contest is set for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the Arena. The hotdog-eating contest is set for 7 p.m. on Thurs., Oct. 16.

Another addition this year is a special show, K9s in Flight. K9s in Flight have been seen on The Discovery Channel , ESPN , The Disney Channel, Animal Planet, HBO, The Jerry Lewis Telethon, MTV Music Television, and more. They will perform in the Arena at 5 p.m. and at 7:45 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 18.

Jones said the Fair committee also is using social media to spread the word about Covington County Fair events, for the first time. One can follow the fair on Twitter , @covingtonfair14; on Instagram, 2014covingtoncountyfair; and on Facebook, Kiwanis Covington County Fair.
